Create New E-mail Account
This walk through will show you how to configure a new account for the initial setup of MAC Mail 6.0 included with MAC OSX 10.8
These steps are identical for adding a new account from the accounts tab
Click the Mac Mail icon in the dock to open Mac Mail 6
Welcome to Mail is displayed
Enter the verizon.net user name, e-mail address, and password in the provided fields
Click Continue
MAC Mail will automatically try to find and configure the Verizon e-mail account.
NOTE: This rarely completes with the correct account information. It is quite common for MAC Mail to mis-configure verizon.net customers for Yahoo mail by mistake. The remainder of this walk through will show you how to properly configure a normal (non Yahoo) Verizon.net e-mail account
MAC Mail will display what it thinks is the correct information
Click Create
Click Preferences from Mail menu in the top navigation

The General preferences tab is displayed
Click the Accounts tab
Select the account you want to modify in the left hand column.
Verify the information on this tab is correct as follows:
- Enable this account should be checked
- Description - whatever you would like to name the account (Verizon Mail is a good name to use)
- Email address: customers verizon.net e-mail address (or Verizon Yahoo e-mail address)
- Incoming Mail Server:
- For a normal verizon e-mail account use: incoming.verizon.net
- For a Verizon Yahoo e-mail account use: incoming.yahoo.verizon.net
- Username: the verizon username associated with this mail account
- Password: the password associated with this mail account
- Outgoing Mail Server SMTP: should be verizon.net (it will match the name in the description field when you have completed setup)
Now click the Advanced tab
The advanced tab is displayed
- Ensure there is a check next to Include when automatically checking for new messages
- Optional - check Remove copy from server after receiving message, after one week. It is best to check this to avoid the online mailbox exceeding its maximum storage capacity
- Optional - Prompt me to skip messages over X size (This is not recommended as customers will not receive mail over the size they choose)
- Port: 995 (Verizon Yahoo use port 110)
- Check use SSL (Verizon Yahoo - uncheck this box)
- Authentication: Password
Click the Account Information tab
From the Outgoing Mail Server drop down, select Edit SMTP Server List
For a normal verizon.net email account, click on the server name and change it to: outgoing.verizon.net
If this is a Verizon Yahoo email account, click on the server name and change it to: outgoing.yahoo.verizon.net
Click the Advanced tab
Use the following settings:
- Use default ports (25,465, 587)
- For verizon.net email Check - Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)
- For Verizon Yahoo email, uncheck - Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)
- Authentication: Password
- User Name: verizon username
- Password: password associated with the verizon username
Click OK
You are returned to the Accounts screen
Click the close icon in the top left corner
You are prompted to save the changes.
Click Save
You are returned to MAC Mail. Click Receive Mail to begin receiving mail for the new account
